About the Hack

EnvHack 2 has been made possible with funding from the EU Life+ CLEAR Info project.

The CLEAR Info project has taken data the Environment Agency collects from regulated industries who have environmental permits and merged it with business information about the structure of companies. For the first time, we will have data that provides a comprehensive overview of companies’ & communities’ environmental performance & risks. EnvHack2 is a great opportunity to explore this unique data & to join it up with other data sets, enabling understanding of industry’s overall footprint. Solutions created from this data may influence change & reduce business environmental impacts.

About the Data

We are bringing some of our best data on industry regulation, including all of the sites we regulate, the companies that operate them and the permits we issue at these sites concerning emissions (to land, water and air), waste & water abstraction. We also have data about breaches of environmental permits and environmental incidents that have occurred. For the first time, thanks to the EU-funded CLEARinfo project we’re able to aggregate our data to show how corporations have behaved across all of their sites.

We think this is really interesting data but need your wisdom on how it can best be visualised & used.
We’d also love you to bring relevant data that could be merged with our data to create new things!

As we approach the hack weekend, we’ll be filling out the EnvHackPad – please help us to do this…

Challenge areas

We’re remaining fairly flexible about defining the challenges & problems for this hack. We’d like to give you space to think creatively on what could be achieved with better visualisation & analysis for a number of different user groups:

  • LOCAL GOVERNMENT
  • MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
  • CAMPAIGN GROUPS
  • PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
  • TRADE ASSOCIATIONS
